10:15 am - y hallo thar
Hello teh Eljay. It's been a while, and I haven't forgotten about you yet (not quite, anyway).

I don't remember what you all already know, but here's what's going on in my life lately.

Jen and I broke up, and she will be moving out shortly. I don't really want to pay $550 in rent each month, but I also don't really want a roommate unless it's someone who is particularly cool; if you happen to know someone needing a place, and who has a fondness for cats and dogs, let me know. It is otherwise a quite nice place, and the rent is pretty cheap for what you get.

Thanksgiving was mostly boring, since everyone was gone, but that also meant that Delphine was back from Oregon, so I got to catch up with her. She left again before I even realized it.

I finally replaced my old shoes with some new ones.

A guy wants to put some of my Revolt! Puppy pages into a textbook he is working on. I wish I could get more motivated about this, but my muse has completely abandoned me.

10:02 am - Halloween-times
We lost this year's Cinema16 costume contest, but at least we weren't robbed by Kenny from South Park. This time it was a very good Tina and Ike Turner who were funny and spot on, and I knew they were going to win when I first saw them.

This year, adult contemporary music stars of the early '90s were apparantly the theme, because Elton John got second place, and a well made-up dominatrix got third. All in all, more impressive than last year's store-bought competitors. I think each of our group got their own special kudos from various people.

We also found Harvey Dent, a.k.a. Two-Face and we ganged up on a lone Robin. We have one more costume competition (the one we won last year).

9:26 am - Self Portrait as the Scarecrow
Legion of Doooooom! Here is me as The Scarecrow for Halloween. We went to the Starlight Lounge for a costume contest. One of our number, a Frankenfurter from Rocky Horror split the cash prize with a dumb old hag in a store-bought witch costume. She was friends with a large part of the panel of judges. Robbed again!

Krypton is having another costume contest, though; they weren't initially, but I called them up and helped convince them otherwise. I think we may go in on Thursday.

Jen went as Edie Sedgwick and was eye-catching.
Marcus was a lunch lady, but he should be done with his Captain Cold costume by real Halloween.

One thing I started doing early on with these street portraits was take multiple pictures in brief succession (usually three of them). This one is a good example of what I'm talking about. I asked them to pose and they agreed, so they stood there, all stiff, stale, posed, fake smiles.

I click down once, and they think they're done, so the girl on the left starts to say something to her friend in the middle, and I click down again. This second photo ends up being bad because heads are turned strangely and it just doesn't look as good.

Then they start laughing and smiling warmly and naturally and the third click returns a much better picture than the group would have originally given me. It's worked well in a few instances already.

Then the same girl (on the left) gave me her e-mail address. Ooh la la! Okay, not quite, but she has a zine and wants me to submit some more photos of Lincoln street fashions. Goooo networking!

I've been watching a lot of movies recently. That's pretty boring to talk about, but I've been enjoying it.

3:03 pm - Justin and Jess

Justin and Jess

What a lively weekend full of no sleep.

The highlight, I would have to say, share's time with the lowlight. On Friday, we lost our new kitten-friend, right after Jen paid for vet inspection and shots. We searched all evening and could not turn her up. So we set some food things out, along with the towel she was sleeping in, and checked back periodically for the next 12 hours. You never know how many stray cats hang around until you put out food and make regular checks. I think there were three or four cats sitting out there at various times.

Finally, we hit the jackpot! Little Baberaham Lincoln was sitting out there! I snuck out, and she went right back under the porch. But this time, we weren't letting her leave the premises. Through various tactics, we managed to lure her ever closer, until finally I just crawled under the porch and grabbed her (an ordeal in itself, I assure you, but I won't bore you with the strategy). It was an epic struggle, but Jen's vet money did not go to waste, and Baberaham is back, safe, and presumably happy.

After that, Jen, Alex and I went to Lawrence, KS to see the Polyphonic Spree. I got to visit with my old college buds, Justin and Jess, and Jen got to tour the Lawrence campus. The Spree was epic, with an awesome, full sound. The opening bands sucked, The Redwalls and Rooney, and I bought my first cell phone game to play during their sets.

That's it in a nutshell.

Our pet fountain warped a good portion of our library floor, so now that has to be replaced. Thankfully, we have a Really Nice Landlord who already has wood and doesn't charge contractor prices to fix something like this.

Nyarlhotep Baberaham Lincoln, the new kitten, has a vet appointment tomorrow at 3:30, and she should be finding a nice home shortly thereafter. Shortly thereafter that, we're going to Kansas City to see some of my best friends from college, and oh yeah, Polyphonic Spree.

Not sure how these other pets are going to work out.

Does this tee-shirt design need a comma after the first "happy"?

Jen and I were both surprised that she found and used the litterbox right away, so she's even got that going for her.

In the meantime, our own pretty vicious is smearing her own diarrhea around the bathroom again. We really picked a winner, I tell ya. Also Ecxabulir was a bit jealous of the small one, and confused, too.

We had another fun visitor the previous night, I took pictures of it. Click through the photo to see more.

5:35 pm - Day 34: Bomb the Music Industry
Macrus and I saw Bomb the Music Industry in some guys' basement. It was a good time, but the band was kinda cranky. I got a tee shirt and took some pretty crappy pictures. This one isn't too bad, though.

I'm demoing the living room to Ecxabulir while I'm gone. I was gone for about an hour last night and she didn't tear it up. Good job, Xabey-baby. You get another hour tonight while I go pick up some things to help the construction of my costume.

Speaking of Xabe, I got registration papers from the government today, telling me I owe them $30 for Excalibur 'Zabe'. First off, it's not Excalibur. Why would I call the dog Zabe instead of something that sounds like Excalibur, like X or Calibre or Kali? Second off, there is no Z in Ecxabulir, so it's Xabe. Third off, use the right goddamn quotation marks. Single quotes are only used inside double quotes. You're a government agency. Be professional.

Last weekend was the Gitogito Hustler show, to which I took Alex, who had his mind suitably blown (or at least a reasonable appreciation there of). They put on a riotously good show, and the whole crowd (rather packed, considering Duffy's is a quite small venue) gave them lots of love.

I took pictures of them up until the end of their first song, when my camera battery died. I wish I could have gotten some of Mitsuko's crazier faces, as well as more of the band, but at least I got to enjoy the rest of the show uninhibited. I made off with a pile of their merch, too.

I also saw a former co-worker, who seems to be doing rather well for herself. It was kind of awkward, but then I usually am.

Last night I watched Infernal Affairs II which was an unexpected and unexpectedly good prequel.

Tonight is the Bomb the Music Industry! show. I almost forgot about it.

2:56 pm - Scarecrow: Full Mask Prototype
Last night, I made a masking-tape prototype for my Halloween mask this year. You can see it in this picture. It's not real clear here, but the mask actually has two parts. A hood that goes over my head and then under the Jughead-style collar, which comes up over the bottom of my nose.

You can see me wearing only the bottom part of the mask if you click through to my flickr photos. You'll get a better understanding of the contraption there.

Anyone know of a good way to make some horrifying-looking claw-type hands? Maybe I should grow out my fingernails and cut them into points.

Also, I need a good straw or, ideally, a duster-type cowboy hat. Anybody have anything like that?

Also, I need a rusty scythe or pitchfork. Someone mentioned something to me earlier about one of these things, but I don't remember whom.

While I'm sure it would be less profitable (far less profitable, I would assume), it would be far more honest if they would just feature ads with "normal" people in them without apologizing for the fact that these people are flawed.

"Look at this girl. She uses Dove. She's so pretty (and fat) but still pretty (but also still fat). Feel good about your (albeit fat) self. Yay, Dove!"

And haps births to Mr. Cristr.

3:30 pm - Onslaught for True Beauty

I was lambasted for my blank post yesterday, but what it all boiled down to was this commercial:

Hey guys, she's ugly!
Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Dove's Campaign for True Beauty seem to be adding to the onslaught rather than fighting against it. All of the "ugly" models they use (in various other commercials and print ads) are gorgeous; not to mention this advert shows as much commercial beauty imagery as any other "you're not beautiful enough" commercial.

But wait guys, it's a success! Dove's profits are up 10%. Women are rushing out to buy Dove products because darn it, Dove makes them as beautiful as they already are...wait, what?

Just like Against Me!, this proves that double standards can be quite profitable.

5:10 pm - What I Ate: Pear and Gorgonzola Cheese Pizza
Are you hungry?

Cuz I am. Constantly. I eat things, and then I think, "What else is there for me to eat?" I haven't gotten fat yet, though. I wonder if it's because I've been going on so many walks with Xabe. I figure it's either that or a parasite.

If it's a parasite, I know I didn't get it from Cthali. She got back from the hospital today, and didn't have any problems. Over $100 worth of not problems. I think it was something in her water, which I had switched out a day before I took her in.

Speaking of Cthali. Last night I watched a low-budget production of The Call of Cthulhu. It was very well-adapted from the source material, and it was a pretty fun production. The only times it faltered were when they tried to use computer trickery, and even then, it was pretty competently done in most places. The most unique part about it, was that it was a silent film, made to look like it actually came from the time of H.P. Lovecraft. I think that alone made the movie more of a success than if you tried to throw in some low-rent actors. Four flabby claws out of five.

For those of you following the Tumblr scene, check out Jen's tumblelog.

Last night, I broke my Q virginity, and it was... quite uneventful. Christr, you must know the secret days when the Q is hoppin' (thereby making the adjective "secret" completely inappropriate). We did see a transvestite sing "I Believe I Can Fly," though.

Also, Cthali has been hospitalized for loose stools. That's diarrhea for those of you not amongst polite company. I was sad when I handed them a bag of her favorite treats. It somehow made it feel more permanent.

Plus Xabe hates me, cuz she doesn't want to be in her cage anymore. At least Pigbard loves me, cuz I got him a fresh bag o'carrots last night. Special trip just for him.

Tonight there's a work-based after-work thing going on, called "Friday Afternoon Club." I should have some pictures of that for today's photo.

Got some good photos today. Lincoln was crawling with the photogenic, including a rather striking condor.

I got some spare time at work, and following a bit of encouragement, have dove head-first into updating the image gallery for the Tree Guide and Tree Store; they were (and still are) in dire need of work. The hard part isn't necessarily re-writing the gallery, as much as it is moving, updating and adding all six hundred plus photos.

This is something I've been meaning to do for the last year and a half, and it's exciting to see it getting done. Also of good help; we got a Nikon D40+ (i think it's a plus; it's better than a regular D40, anyway) so we can actually take some good photos ourselves.

Shit like this makes me feel like I'm a part of something.

This weekend was kind of blah, but it had it's high points, such as being shot at.

I went to a party, which was more of a get-together, with some friends. It was fairly uneventful. Then we (more or less) found out about another party and trekked over to that one. Just as we were getting there, we saw the hostess chasing some gangstas away; one of them had a gun and fired it into the air. We decided not to cross the street and walked in the opposite direction before the fuzz showed up.

11:30 am - Day 18: Street Art is NOT a Crime
I broke my telephoto lens. All is not lost, however. It seems the threading on it cracked or wore away, so now it doesn't zoom out. But I can push the lens back in manually, so basically, I just have to be careful not to overzoom, lest I must start the zoom all over again.

In better news, I got a second lens from a pawn shop for a mere quarter (of a hundred dollars), and it's more of a standard size, 35–80mm, so I can more easily take close range images. It's a little less bulky, too.

In movie review news, D-War and (made-for-DVD) Attack of the Gryphon are both hilariously fun (and bad), and Stardust was rather charming and good, despite being a bit overlong.
